Last April, after being introduced by Director of Athletics Mark Benson, Kelly Morrone strode onto the hardwood court of Broadview Arena, where she will take the reins of the Great Danes women’s basketball team, a perennial powerhouse in the America East.
“Kelly is a proven winner who has demonstrated the ability to build strong programs at every level,” said Benson. Morrone spent six years as head coach at Merrimack College, leading the team through a transition to Division I, and was named the 2026 MAAC Coach of the Year after just two seasons. Morrone’s coaching pedigree also includes a seven-year run at John Carroll University, where she secured 117 victories and multiple conference championships, and assistant coaching stints at William & Mary, Rhode Island, Davidson and the University at Buffalo.
“I look forward to building meaningful relationships within the campus and community, developing our student-athletes on and off the court, and competing at the highest level,” said Morrone. “We are ready to get to work and represent UAlbany with pride, toughness and integrity.”
